Honest comparison

Signal protects what you say. Blockd protects who you are.

Both are end-to-end encrypted. Only one lets you sign up without a phone number, and with Premium it routes your traffic through Tor, so the network sees a Tor exit node, not your IP. Here's the straight version. No spin, no hit pieces.

TL;DR: the short answer
No phone number required
Blockd: Yes · Signal: No

Signal ties your account to a phone number. Blockd doesn't ask for one.

Premium in Blockd

Where Signal wins, and we'll say it plainly.

Signal is a serious app run by serious people. It's open-source, audited, peer-reviewed, and used by journalists, dissidents, and security professionals around the world. The Signal Protocol is the gold standard for message encryption, and Blockd uses cryptographic primitives in the same lineage.

If your only concern is the content of your messages, and you're comfortable handing over a phone number to use the service, Signal is excellent.

What Blockd isn't pretending to do is replace Signal in those use cases overnight. We're a younger product. We haven't been audited at Signal's scale yet. Be skeptical of any privacy app that claims otherwise.

Where Blockd wins, in the free tier.

Encryption protects what you say. It doesn't protect who you are. Blockd's free tier closes that gap. No payment, no upgrade required.

No phone number. No identity tag.

Signal requires a phone number to sign up. That number is tied to your real identity through your carrier, your billing, and every other service you've ever used it on. Even if every message is encrypted, the account itself is a name tag. Blockd doesn't ask for a phone number. It doesn't ask for an email. You can create an account without telling us, or anyone watching the network, who you are. Free.

Blinded routing tokens.

Blockd's relay infrastructure uses rotating cryptographic tokens as recipient identifiers, not stable account IDs. Even an observer watching all traffic across Blockd's relay couldn't construct a social graph showing who messages whom. Free.

Your keys. Your control.

Here's a difference most comparisons miss. With Blockd, your private key is yours. You can rotate it on demand, with forward secrecy, whenever you want. Signal generates and manages your keys for you, and you don't get direct access to your private key. Both apps are end-to-end encrypted. Only one puts the key itself in your hands.

What Blockd Premium adds.

Blockd Premium is an optional subscription that layers stronger network-level anonymity on top of the free tier. You don't need it for the identity wins above, but if your threat model includes hiding your IP from the network, this is where those tools live.

Native Tor / onion routing. Premium

Standard messaging apps, including Signal, connect directly from your device to their servers. That connection reveals your IP address, which reveals your network, which reveals you. With Blockd Premium, you can route your traffic through Tor before it ever touches our infrastructure, so the network sees a Tor exit node and our servers don't see your IP. Signal has no equivalent at any tier.

Automatic EXIF stripping on shared images. Premium

Every photo your phone takes is stamped with metadata: GPS coordinates, device model, timestamp, sometimes more. Most messaging apps pass that metadata through. With Blockd Premium, EXIF stripping is on by default, so every shared image gets scrubbed before it leaves your device. You can toggle it off if you have a specific reason to keep metadata, but the privacy-safe default is on.
